Interrail Pass: explore Europe by train

The various Interrail passes can be used by anyone residing in a participating European country (whether it is a member state of the European Union or not), in Russia or in Turkey. However, you will not be able to travel with your Interrail pass in your own country of residence.

The pass is strictly nominative, and the traveler's country of residence must be communicated when purchasing the pass.

There are Interrail passes for travelers of all ages:

• adults
• youth (under 28)
• seniors (from 60 years old)
• children (from 4 and under 12): up to 2 children under 12 years old can accompany for free (free Pass for accompanying children). From the 3rd child, you will need to purchase a Youth Pass. Children under 4 travel for free and do not need a Pass at all.

The Interrail Global Pass allows you to travel anywhere in the following countries (except your own country of residence):

Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland (Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland), Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, and Turkey.

If you want to travel in only one country, you can also opt for an Interrail One Country Pass for the country of your choice.

When purchasing your Interrail pass, you can choose from the following options:

Global Pass:

• 4, 5 or 7 days of travel to be freely chosen during a period of 1 month
• 10 or 15 days of travel to be freely chosen during a period of 2 months
• 15 or 22 consecutive days of travel
• unlimited travel during 1, 2 or 3 months

One Country Pass:

• 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 days of travel to be freely chosen during a period of 1 month

The price of your Interrail Pass will depend on several factors:

• how many countries you want to visit (a Global Pass for entire Europe or a One Country Pass for the country of your choice?)
• the duration of validity and the number of days of travel
• the passholder's age at the moment of travelling (adult, youth, senior or child)
• the desired comfort class (1^st or 2^nd)

On most European trains, no reservation is necessary and you just have to show your Interrail Pass to board. However, if you take night trains or certain high-speed trains, you will have to reserve your seat or bed for an additional charge. The amount of this supplement varies from train to train and is not included in the price of your Interrail pass.

Nothing complicated: for each train, the Rail Planner app tells you for whether reservation is required or not. 

If reservation is necessary, you can book your seat in the Rail Planner App, on the Interrail website, by phone at the Contact Center of most railway companies or at the counters of Europe's main international rail stations.

For Eurostar, TGV INOUI, TGV Lyria, European Sleeper, Nightjet connections to/from Belgium and EC trains Switzerland-Italy, you can even book your seat or bed at the special passholder fare online on our own website. 

Using the Mobile Pass is very easy. All you need is your smartphone, the Rail Planner app and an internet connection (no need to be connected at all times, but we recommend to connect at least once every 3 days).

If you want to travel with the Mobile Pass, just select the "Mobile Pass" option when purchasing your Interrail pass. After your purchase, you'll get a confirmation email that contains your order details and your Pass number. This number will allow you to upload your pass into the Rail Planner app.

How to activate your Mobile Pass

Just follow the instructions in your order confirmation email to upload your Pass into the app and activate it so it's ready for travel. You can do both steps at once, or you can add your Pass to the app first and activate it later on, just before starting your trip. It's up to you!

Travelling with your Mobile Pass

Use the app's journey planner to search for the journeys you want to take. Tap to save them to "My Trips", where you can see an overview of matching schedules. When you're ready to take a train, tap to add that journey to your Pass, and it will appear among your tickets in the "My Pass" section, ready for inspection on board. The app's "My Pass" section therefore serves both as your travel diary and transport ticket.

Exception: the German Pass and the 3 days' Global Pass are only available online.

When you buy your Interrail Pass, you can still freely choose your departure date within 11 months of purchase. This actually means that you can buy your Pass from 11 months before the start of the trip.

Our tip: Don't hesitate to take advantage of some promotion on the purchase of your Interrail Pass at any time of the year, as you'll still have 11 months left to plan your trip and your vacation at your ease. You'll manage, won't you?

On the other hand, if you're more of the "last minute" type, you can buy your Interrail Mobile Pass until the very last minute, since you'll instantaneously get an a-mail with all the details for uploading your Pass in the app (if you prefer a paper pass, please take the delivery times into account).

As long as you have not reached the first day of validity of your Interrail Pass, you can exchange it for free for another Interrail Pass (via the Interrail customer service) or get a refund of 85%.

From the first day of validity of your Pass, exchange or refund are no longer possible.
