A day in Cologne: the best shopping and dining spots

Cologne’s dubbed “Germany’s fun-loving capital” for a reason: here, you’ll find dozens of trendy restaurants and clubs, interesting sights and attractions – just think about the colossal Cologne Cathedral – and a varied shopping scene.

Here are our recommendations for your shopping trip in Cologne!

SHOPPING

Whatever your heart is coveting, you’ll surely find it in Cologne. The city’s shopping scene is huge, ranging from international chain stores to quirky boutiques and trendy outlet stores.

The city’s most-visited shopping street is Schildergasse, a pedestrian zone which is crowded all year round. Together with its neighbouring street, Hohe Straße, it’s home to all the popular department and chain stores, offering one well-known brand after the next.

If you’re looking for something a bit more unique, however, the Belgian Quarter is the place to be. This up-and-coming fashion district features dozen of concept stores, local designer boutiques and artsy shops.

Another location worth mentioning is Breite Strasse, a street lined with elegant and imposing houses which accommodate charming shops, boutiques and shopping centres. Looking for a postcard? The Walther König bookshop has around 50,000 different ones on offer!

EATING

Cologne has around 2,000 eateries to choose from, so whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a fine-dining experience, you won’t have to look long. We’re happy to share a few of our favourite places.

Peters Brauhaus – Featuring painted glass ceilings and mahogany furnishings, this brewery offers typical German dishes such as sauerkraut with sausages, pork chops and “Flammkuchen”.

Die Fette KuhPremium hot dogs and homemade burgers is what you can expect at “The Fat Cow” restaurant. This grill restaurant is really popular, so it can be quite packed… but it’ll be worth it if you’re a meat lover! Keep an eye on the weekly specials, as well.

Rosendorn – This restaurant serves delicious tapas: patatas bravas, tortilla, Serrano croquettes, crunchy baguette with Aioli,… Just take your pick from the extensive menu. In summer, you can enjoy your meal out on the terrace facing the charming Ostermannplatz.

Unsicht-Bar – Have dinner in the dark! This unique dining experience is for the adventurers among you: after your aperitif, all the lights go out in this restaurant. And with the (temporary) loss of vision, your other senses will be heightened!

Hommage – Fancy a little something after your meal? This hipster café is the place for you, offering quality coffee and tea, pastries, pancakes and much more.
