1. Museums to choose from
There is nothing like a winter day to plan a visit to one of the famous museums on Museum Square. Do you fancy a visit to the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum or Van Gogh Museum? Or would you rather discover a less well-known gem, such as the Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder? In this canal house from the Golden Age, you’ll find a church in the attic!
2. A winter cruise along the canal
If you're in Amsterdam, you'll almost certainly take a cruise along the canal. Our tip? This winter, opt for a cruise after sunset. The city lights will be reflected beautifully on the water. It's an extra touch of magic, guaranteed!
3. A drink by the fireside
Many Amsterdam cafés have crackling fireplaces in winter. Wherever you find yourself in the city, there's always a café with an open fire nearby. Near Amsterdam Centraal, for example, step into the cosy Hannekes Boom. In Amsterdam Oost, sink into a seat by the fire at the tasting room of the Poesiat & Kater brewery. And in Amsterdam Noord, warm up by the flames at the trendy Pllek. A stunning view over the IJ comes at no extra cost.
4. Go ice skating on Museumplein, with the Rijksmuseum as your backdrop
Ice skating is a deeply rooted Dutch tradition, with the Elfstedentocht (the "Eleven Cities Tour") as its crowning moment. Originally, skating was a way to get quickly from A to B across the frozen waters of the Netherlands. Today, it's mostly a fun pastime and an exciting sport.
In November, December and January, you can go ice skating in Amsterdam at the Museumplein outdoor ice rink, with the Rijksmuseum as a stunning backdrop. There's plenty to see and do on and around the ice too! So go ahead and lace up your skates.
5. Stay indoors ;)
Of course, Amsterdam is a wonderful city to wander around. But what if it's really too cold? Or the rain spoils your plans? Even then, there's plenty to do in Amsterdam. Catch a film at the cinema or see a theatre show. Not that special, you say? Just wait until you've seen the main auditorium of Pathé Tuschinski. Before you know it, the splendour of the hall will draw your attention away from the film!
