Il Est Cinq Heures, Paris S’Éveille - J. Dutronc

Any list of songs about European cities is not complete without this classic. The song is inspired by “Tableau de Paris à cinq heures du matin”, a song written by Marc-Antoine Madeleine Désaugiers in 1802. Dutronc sings about Paris at sunrise in the 1960s. He describes the grand Montparnasse railway station as "no more than a carcass". When he wrote the song, the old station was being demolished to make room for the new Tour Montparnasse building.

Hometown Glory - Adèle (London)

You may not know it, but this song is an ode to London. Adèle is very attached to her hometown of London. She wrote this song after an argument with her mother, who wanted her to study in Liverpool. Adèle refused: she felt in no way connected to the city of Liverpool and she had experienced so much in London already.

London is always a good idea. Eurostar will get you there from Brussels or Lille in no time at all. A weekend in London means you are going to have to make some choices. There is so much to see in the British capital: Piccadilly Circus, Big Ben, Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, ... And shopaholics will definitely have to include a visit to Oxford Street, Harrods and the city's many markets. If you are more into culture, make sure to stop by Shakespeare's Globe.
