Public transport in Paris is operated by the Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (www.ratp.fr). Inner city public transport includes the metro subway system, trains and buses.
The Paris metro system is by far the most popular and convenient means of transport. Each metro line is colour coded and is easily recognisable. It is the cheapest, fastest and most recommended option for inner city travel. The Paris metro system includes 16 metro lines. At Paris-Nord, you can change to lines 4 and 5, RER lines B, D and E. The metro brings passengers to nearly every corner of the city. Metro trains operate between 5 a.m. until 12.30 a.m.
The bus system in Paris is very user-friendly as well. Most buses travel from Monday until Saturday between 6.30 a.m. and 12.30 a.m. After this time, night buses operate hourly. The local train network is called the RER. These local commuter trains provide transport to destinations in the Paris suburbs.
Metro tickets may be used on RER trains and buses. However, if you are planning on using the public transport system frequently, you will save yourself some money if you purchase a day ticket, or a weekly or monthly pass, which allows unlimited travel on the public transport system at a certain price.
