Saint-Raphael is a real picture postcard destination. This seaside town has all sorts of other attractions typifying the Côte d’Azur. Whether you’re into sports, exploring or just lazing on the beach, you’ll find it all here!

With a coastline stretching for 36 km, the commune of Saint-Raphael is a sure-fire success when it comes to beach holidays. Choose between fine sandy beaches, pebble beaches, shaded shorelines, creeks and rocky inlets.

And if you’re an explorer at heart, come and discover the Sentier du Littoral or the Massif de l’Esterel. There, you will find the Pic de l’Ours, the Rocher Saint-Barthélémy, the panoramic viewpoint of Cap Roux and the ravines of the Perthus and Malinfernet. Exploring the old town and port is also a wonderfully relaxing way of passing the time, but you shouldn’t miss the Corniche d’Or coast road, linking Saint-Raphael to Cannes.

For the sportspeople among you, a variety of water sports are available, while golf enthusiasts should head for Valescure, the “golfing district”.

Tips and practical information

Saint-Raphaël

This basilica overlooks the old port, its Estérel pink sandstone façade making it stand out. Its dome, rounded arches, and openings are reminiscent of the Romano-Byzantine style that was in fashion at the time of its construction in 1887. The golden figure of the Archangel Raphael dominates the main facade of the church. Useful information: this was the last church in France to be awarded Basilica status by Pope John Paul II, in 2004.

The Saint-Raphael archaeological museum is at the centre of the medieval old town. This 17th-century building is the old vicarage of the 12th-century “Sant Rafèu” church. It is built on the ruins of the “castrum”, and ramparts, loopholes, and arrowslits can still be seen in the museum gardens. The museum itself is home to a large collection of Gallo-Roman artefacts from underwater excavations near Agay and Anthéor. Magnificent collections illustrate the lives of the prehistoric societies which lived in the Esteral massif during the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Metal Ages.

On 15th August 1944, the Provence Landing started on this very beach. Lying to the south of the Cap du Dramont, it was chosen by the Allies for two reasons — it is a pebble beach and is located outside the main town. Make the most of your time there by taking the opportunity to discover the rich flora of the Cap du Dramont and visit the Ile d’Or.
