In Montpellier, when it comes to activities, you’re spoiled for choice. Enjoy a guided walking tour of the city; from the Place de la Comédie to the Place de la Canourgue or Place du Peyrou, you can follow the maze of medieval alleyways and discover Montpellier through the ages.

You’ll also find out just how youthful a city Montpellier is. Its dynamism is partly due to its university, as Montpellier is to France what Cambridge is to England, or what Salamanca is to Spain. And the 60,000 students living there certainly help shape life in the city.

With its student population, Montpellier certainly doesn’t let up in terms of cultural activities. Festivals, various museums (with the Fabre museum heading the list), theatres, cinemas and Roman remains make it an especially rich city in terms of culture.

And around Montpellier, you can enjoy the Mediterranean beaches, visit the Folies (sumptuous 17th century villas), visit the Lac du Salagou or venture into the Cévennes.

Thirty kilometres from Montpellier lies the fortified town of Aigues-Mortes. Built by Saint Louis in the 12th century, its walls protect the first French port on the Mediterranean. The majestic keep – the Constance Tower – overlooks the ramparts and the 20 towers that protected the town. The keep also acted as a prison for Protestants from Cévennes during the 18th century. A multimedia presentation and high-quality soundtrack bring the history of this medieval monument to life.
