Surrounded by gardens and decorated with expanses of water, Metz invites you on a picturesque journey. The capital of the Lorraine Region, 3000 years of history have created a deep-rooted character in the city of Metz, where an exceptional legacy has been remarkably preserved within a green setting at the meeting of the Moselle and Seille rivers. Historical sights include the ancient springs at the Cour d’Or museums, the splendid Saint-Etienne Cathedral with 6500m2 of stained glass, the Place d’Armes, the Imperial Quarter, and the imposing Guillaume II station.

Nowadays, the historical city blends seamlessly with European Metz, which lies at the heart of international European networks and supplements its urban chic with other architectural marvels such as the Arsenal, renovated by Ricardo Bofill, and the Centre Pompidou-Metz, a bold space devoted to modern and contemporary art.

In summer, the city puts on a series of open-air concerts and events, but in Metz the party never really stops. The Fêtes de la Mirabelle, the Nuit Blanche, the Marche Illuminée, the Saint-Nicolas and the Christmas Market are some of the popular and much-anticipated events that take place every year.

This city at the heart of the Moselle has become an unmissable destination, so what are you waiting for?

Tips and practical information

Metz

The Centre Pompidou-Metz is dedicated to modern and contemporary creation in all its forms and features internationally-recognised temporary exhibitions. Alongside the exhibitions, there is a cultural programme on offer with four events per week, with a choice of dance, cinema, concerts, performances, children’s shows, and more. The idea behind the Centre Pompidou-Metz is to display and help people discover forms of artistic expression and to bring the great works of the 20th and 21st centuries to the wider public with the aid of its 60,000 pieces. The Centre Pompidou-Metz was designed to be a unique experience where events take place throughout the year. The building is constructed around a 77m-high spire, a reference to the year 1977, when the Centre Pompidou in Paris was opened. The magnificent outer shell, with its roof inspired by a Chinese hat, invites you to get away from it all with its wide glass facades, while the large 1200m² hall varies in height from 6 to 20 metres and enables huge works to be displayed.

Constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, the immense and surprising Saint-Etienne Cathedral is a genuine encyclopaedia of Gothic art. Formed by the joining of two churches, it has witnessed the city’s great moments and tells the lively and passionate story of Metz. Its 42-metre high nave made it one of the highest in the medieval world, and beneath its lofty vaults it features Europe’s biggest collection of stained glass (6500m2), a fabulous journey of colours from the Middle Ages to the present day, including the flamboyant work of Marc Chagall. The delicacy of its gates, the calm squares that surround it and the splendour of its night-time lighting are a permanent invitation to wander in and discover.

This jewel in the city’s crown is located on a little island, a strip of land called the Garden of Love, opposite the opera house. Lit up at night, it is one of the city’s most beautiful sights. Built in the 19th century, this is a Protestant church featuring a neoclassical organ with 52 stops and 3 keyboards, which is often played at recitals.

On the Place de la Comédie, this Tuscan-influenced building is a blend of classical, elegant and very sober architecture. Its geometrical lines are broken up by the central antechamber. The entablature and the pediment decorated with the imperial arms of Metz are adorned with statues which were added under Napoleon III. This was one of the first theatres built in France and is the oldest one still in business.

These gardens have been located on what used to be the citadel’s moat, since it was filled in 1816. The well-designed paths are bordered by benches and flowerbeds, while the pool with its brilliant water jets will delight the little ones. The gardens also offer an unrestricted bird’s-eye view of the river with Mont Saint-Quentin in the background.
