In Lyons, there is so much to discover. Start by having a look around the city centre. Listed as a World Heritage Centre by UNESCO in 1998, you can see the amazing way in which the Roman town of Lugdunum has turned into the metropolis of Lyons today. Then you can wander through the other districts of the city, where the river Rhône and the river Saône meet. Old Lyon, which backs on to the Colline de Fourvière and which is bordered by the banks of the Saône, has a wonderful Renaissance style which you can see as you wander through its alleys and famous traboules. The Presqu'ile district will impress you with its wide 19th century boulevards, which run from the imposing Place Bellecour – in the middle of the city – to the Place de la Comédie. And the slopes of the Croix-Rousse will take you back to the working town of Lyons of yesteryear, whose silk industry was renowned throughout Europe.

And to make sure you end your day well-nourished, you can book a table at one of its award-winning restaurants or enjoy one of the cafés with their famous bouchon meals, providing delicious regional specialities, mainly using pork.

Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, the old town includes the Saint-Jean, Saint-Paul and Saint-Georges quarters, which were once the heart of the city where traders, bankers and other men of letters came to live in the townhouses that are still there today. The architecture is free from rules as all the buildings are different, which is what makes this area so original and beautiful. Typical for the old town are its famous "traboules". These are narrow passageways between the Renaissance buildings, that enable you to discover the city’s most secret places as you walk from one street to another through the old buildings and yards.
