Known as the Gartenstadt, or garden city, Düsseldorf isn’t just about parks! Its castles and historic monuments, for example, testify to the rich past of this city, founded in 1135. The Kaiserwerth quarter, the ruins of the Kaiserpfalz, the church of St. Lambertus, and the castles of Jägerhof and Benrath are cultural sites not to be missed! Düsseldorf is also a modern city, firmly rooted in the 21st century. For lovers of contemporary architecture, the Medienhafen port, the Thyssen tower, the Rheinkniebrücke bridge, the Rheinturm, and the Gehrybauten by famous architect Frank Gehry (known in particular for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao) are a must; their settings against the backdrop of the city never fail amaze. The city is also a centre for fashion. Lovers of shops and shopping stroll down the Königsallee or through the Sevens Center, attracting customers with its multicolour neon signs. This formerly abandoned port, renovated several years ago, will fascinate lovers of architectural experimentation. Designed by various European and American architects (including Frank O. Gehry), its ultra-modernist appeal is combined with a sense of decomposition. There are almost no vertical lines; instead the shapes are undulating and unstructured. The buildings are now home to creative, media and marketing enterprises. The Düsseldorf tourist office offers guided tours of the site.

The palace of the prince electors of the Palatinate was built between 1755 and 1770 by Karl-Theodor. Behind its pink façade are various rooms decorated in the rococo style. In summer it is worth visiting just for the large park (60 hectares) and impressive fountain. The two adjacent wings of the palace are also open to visitors. The east wing houses the unique “Museum of European Garden Art”.
