Take the train to visit Bruges

As soon as you arrive, go to the Bruges Tourist Office and get hold of the official city guide. In addition to its 3 walks, this guide contains a city map, a list of the museums, cycle hire points, and many useful addresses.

However, the walks are the most useful part of this guide. They take you on comprehensive journeys through the city, explaining the history of Bruges along the way, peppered with juicy anecdotes. So, along the alleyways and romantic canals, you can see the Markt, the Belfry, the Burg, the Béguinage, the Sint-Janshospitaal, the Prinsenhof, and the Minnewater. Of course, this list is far from exhaustive…which really shouldn’t come as any surprise when you remember that the whole of the old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage list!

And, of course, Bruges doesn’t stint when it comes to museums. Find out more about the history of the visual arts in Belgium – starring the Flemish Primitives – at the Groeningemuseum, about the history of daily life in Bruges in the 15th to 19th centuries at the Bruggemuseum-Gruuthuse, the history of the old “Halve Maan” brewery, or the history of the Basilica of the Holy Blood.

You can, of course visit the city on foot, but you can also see it by boat, horse-drawn carriage, or bicycle, with a completely different perspective. And if you hire a bicycle, you can set off for the Polders, the flat land around Bruges, where Damme, a splendid medieval town, is just one of the places well worth a visit.

When it comes to accommodation or eating in Bruges, you can count on many restaurants of repute and hotels of quality.
