Are you passionate about literature and philosophy? In Bordeaux, you can trace the steps of the great men of letters who have lit up the city. You will find out about the famous thinker, Montaigne, who was mayor of the city, and about Montesquieu and François Mauriac.

You’ll be mesmerised by the city centre, a jewel of 18th century architecture. Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2007, the Place de la Bourse, the Place du Parlement, the 'Triangle' and especially the imposing Esplanade des Quinconces are superb examples from the Age of Enlightenment which formed the city. A word of advice: Bordeaux is best seen on foot to enjoy the city’s riches and soak up its pleasant atmosphere.

It would be impossible to talk about Bordeaux without a word about its great vineyards, which have given it worldwide renown. Blaye, Bourg, Entre-Deux-Mers, Saint-Emilion, Médoc, Graves, Sauternes... so many amazing different appellations! Throughout the year, Bordeaux’s Tourist Office organises trips to these vineyards where the prestigious chateaux provide tastings of their legendary wines. Please ask for further information.

From the Saint-Pierre quarter to the Sainte-Croix quarter, most of the old town squares (Saint-Pierre, Sainte-Colombe, etc.) have been renovated since the 18th century. The churches and convents are just a small part of the history to be explored in this area of the city, whether via an organised route or at your leisure.
