Welcome in Avignon!
Famous for its theatre festival, the "City of Popes" is also a creative centre which is active all year round through its permanent theatres, art galleries, cinemas, musical associations, dance and literature.
Avignon Festival, which is one of the oldest and most famous theatre festivals in the world, stages shows over three weeks during July in twenty or so locations, which range from small chapels to the legendary Cour d'honneur of the Palais des Papes.
The historical heart of the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Promenade des Doms allows you to walk around the city’s main monuments. As for the famous Pont d'Avignon (Bridge of Avignon), also called the 'Pont Saint-Bénezet' according to the legend that describes its construction, it was destroyed several times by floods and during wars. However, you can still visit it today.
Stroll through the ancient streets and be on the lookout for antique dealers and art galleries, enjoy the local food, taste the flavours of Provence and have a glass of the area’s famous Côtes du Rhône, the wine-growing region of which Avignon is the capital city.
In just a short time, you can get to a variety of other locations: the Pont du Gard, Nîmes, Arles, the Camargue, the Lubéron and Mont Ventoux, Les Baux-de-Provence, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and the Alpilles mountains are on your doorstep.
