Museum Ludwig was founded in 1976 following a generous donation by Peter and Irene Ludwig of 350 modern artworks to the town of Cologne. The museum moved in 1986 to join the Wallraf-Richartz Museum and the Philharmonic in the cultural centre situated between the cathedral, the Rhine, and the central station. 15 years later, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum was transferred to a new building in the old town of Cologne leaving Museum Ludwig with an exhibition area of approximately 8,000 m². Besides German expressionism, the largest American pop art exhibition outside the United States, one of the largest Russian avant-garde collections in the world and the third largest collection of Picasso’s paintings after Barcelona and Paris are the jewels of the collections.

Don’t forget to have a glass of Kolsch ale at a local beer cellar. Warum? Darum! And also because sales of this specialty are forbidden outside Cologne. Naturally, there is a typical regional dish to go with this unique beer. How about half a Hahn, Himmel und Äad of Rheinischer Soorbrode? Herrlich! You can find authentic Kölsch beer in most local pubs. We recommend the Päffgen brewery where they brew their own Päffgen Kölsch beer.
